irrational beliefs

When our beliefs are rigid, they are called irrational beliefs and take the form of musts, absolute shoulds, or have to’s. When clients adhere to rigid premises, they will tend to draw irrational conclusions on the basis of them. These irrational conclusions, or derivative irrational beliefs, take the following forms:
1. I-can’t-stand-it-it is (low frustration tolerance)
2. Damnation (of self, others, and/or life conditions)
3. Absolute-and-never, dichotomous thinking (e.g., that I will always fail or never be approved of by significant others).

LIFE TRAP

THE ELEVEN LIFETRAPS

Two life traps relate to a lack of safety or security in your childhood family – Abandonment and Mistrust

1.      Abandonment: The abandonment life trap is the feeling that people you love will leave you, and you will end up emotionally isolated forever. Whether you feel people close to you will die, leave home forever or abandon you because they prefer someone else, somehow, you feel that you will be left alone. Because of this belief, you may cling to people close to you too much. Ironically, you end up pushing them away. You may get very upset or angry about even normal separations.

2.      Mistrust and abuse: The mistrust and abuse life trap is the expectation that people will hurt or abuse you in some way – that they will cheat, lie, manipulate, humiliate, physically harm or otherwise take advantage of you. If you have this life trap, you hide behind a wall of mistrust to protect yourself. You never let people get too close. You are suspicious of other people’s intentions and tend to assume the worst. You expect that people you love will betray you. Either you avoid relationships altogether, form superficial relationships in which you do not really open up to others or you form relationships with people who treat you badly and then feel angry and vengeful toward them.

Two life traps relate to your ability to function independently in the world – Dependence and Vulnerability.

3.      Dependence: If you are caught in the dependence life trap, you feel unable to handle everyday life in a competent manner without considerable help from others. You depend on others to act as a crutch and need constant support. As a child, you were made to feel incompetent when you tried to assert your independence. As an adult, you seek out strong figures upon whom to become dependent and allow them to rule your life. At work, you shrink from acting on your own. Needless to say, this holds you back.

4.      Vulnerability: With vulnerability, you live in fear that disaster is about to strike – whether natural, criminal, medical or financial. You do not feel safe in the world. If you have this life trap, as a child, you were made to feel that the world is a dangerous place. You were probably overprotected by your parents, who worried too much about your safety. Your fears are excessive and unrealistic, yet you let them control your life and pour your energy into making sure that you are safe. Your fears may revolve around illness: having an anxiety attack, getting AIDS or going crazy. They may be focused around financial vulnerability: going broke and ending up on the streets. Your vulnerability may revolve around other phobic situations, such as fear of flying, being mugged or earthquakes.

Two life traps relate to the strength of your emotional connections to others – Emotional deprivation and Social exclusion.

5.      Emotional deprivation: It is the belief that your need for love will never be met adequately by other people. You feel that no one truly cares for you or understands how you feel. You find yourself attracted to cold and ungiving people or you are cold and ungiving yourself, leading you to form relationships that inevitably prove unsatisfying. You feel cheated and you alternate between being angry about it and feeling hurt and alone. Ironically, your anger just drives people further away, ensuring your continued deprivation. These are people who do not know what love is.

6.      Social exclusion: Social exclusion involves your connection to friends and groups. It has to do with feeling isolated from the rest of the world, with feeling different. If you have this life trap, as a child, you felt excluded by peers. You did not belong to a group of friends. Perhaps you had some unusual characteristic that made you feel different in some way. As an adult, you maintain your life trap mainly through avoidance. You avoid socializing in groups and making friends.  You may have felt excluded because there was something about you that other children rejected. Hence, you feel socially undesirable. As an adult, you may feel that you are ugly, sexually undesirable, and low in status, poor in conversational skills, boring or otherwise deficient. You re-enact your childhood rejection – you feel and act inferior in social situations. It is not always apparent that someone has a social exclusion life trap. Many people with this life trap are quite comfortable in intimate settings and are quite socially skilled. Their life trap may not show in one-to-one relationships. It sometimes surprises us to realize how anxious and aloof they may feel at parties, in classes, at meetings or at work. They have a restless quality – a quality of looking for a place to belong.

The two lifetraps that relate to your self-esteem are Defectiveness and Failure.

7.      Defectiveness: With defectiveness, you feel inwardly flawed and defective. You believe that you would be fundamentally unlovable to anyone who got close enough to really know you. Your defectiveness would be exposed. As a child, you did not feel respected for who you were in your family. Instead you were criticized for your “flaws”. You blamed yourself – you felt unworthy of love. As an adult, you were afraid of love. You find it difficult to believe that people close to you value you, so you expect rejection.

8.      Failure: Failure is the belief that you are inadequate of achievement, such as school, work and sports. You believe you have failed relative to your peers. As a child, you were made to feel inferior in terms of achievement. You may have had a learning disability or you may never have learnt enough discipline to master important skills such as reading. Other children were always better than you. You were called “stupid”, “untalented”, or “lazy”. As an adult, you maintain your life trap by exaggerating the degree of your failure and by acting in ways that ensure your continued failure.

Two life traps deal with self-expression – your ability to express what you want and get your true needs met: Subjugation and Unrelenting standards.

9.      Subjugation: With subjugation, you sacrifice your own needs and desires for the sake of pleasing others or meeting their needs. You allow others to control you. You do this either out of guilt – that you hurt other people by putting yourself first or fear that you will be punished or abandoned if you disobey. As a child, someone close to you, probably a parent subjugated you. As an adult, you repeatedly enter relationships with dominant controlling people and subjugate yourself to them or you enter relationships with needy people who are too damaged to give back to you in return.

10.  Unrelenting standards: If you are in unrelenting standards life trap, you strive relentlessly to meet extreme high expectations of yourself. You place excessive emphasis on status, money, achievement, beauty, order or recognition at the expense of happiness, pleasure, health, a sense of accomplishment and satisfying relationships. You probably apply your rigid standards to other people as well and are very judgemental. When you were a child, you were expected to be the best and you were taught that anything else was failure. You learnt that nothing you did was quite good enough.

Entitlement: The life trap entitlement is associated with the ability to accept realistic limits in life. People who have this life trap feel special. They insist that they be able to do, say or have whatever they want immediately. They disregard what others consider reasonable, what is actually feasible, the time or patience usually required at the cost of others. They have difficulty with self-discipline. Many of the people with this life trap were spoiled as children. They were not required to show self-control or to accept restrictions placed on other children. As adults, they still get very angry when they do not get what they want.

Mental Illness

Mental disorders affect everyone, irrespective of age, gender, residence and living standards, even though some groups are at a higher risk for certain illnesses; only the impact varies.

Mental Health Survey, 2015-16

Conditions related to the brain and mind are acknowledged to be on the increase in recent times. This is probably due to the growing awareness in society, improved recognition, variations in disease patterns, changing lifestyles and biological vulnerabilities. Consequently, depression, anxiety, alcohol use, suicidal behaviours, drug use, sleep disorders and several others are on the increase.

Anxiety

The prototype of anxiety is the fearof separation from loved ones, initially from the mother, especially in infancy, the period of absolute helplessness. In the Freudian view, anxiety emerges in aloneness and darkness, only because these two situations mean separation, and if it persists throughout life, it becomes neurotic.

Regardless of the model of anxiety he adopts (i.e., anxiety as a transformation of undischarged libido or anxiety as a signal of a danger), Freud always associated anxiety with traumatic object loss. He wrote (Freud, 1905/1953) that “anxiety in children is originally nothing other than an expression of the fact that they are feeling the loss of the person they love”, and in a later essay (Freud, 1926/1959a), “anxiety appears as the reaction to the felt loss of the object”.  In the course of development, anxiety is determined also by the threat of losing the love of the object. Freud (1926/1959a) distinguished between anxiety as a reaction to the danger of loss and the pain of mourning which is the reaction to the actual loss of the object. Thus, loneliness may be regarded as the painful longing for the lost object or for the loss of the love of the object.

The interpersonal problems and low-quality, unstable relationships of insecurely attached people can easily result in subjective feelings of loneliness. The term loneliness refers to a negative psychological experience that emanates from actual or perceived deficiencies in a person’s relationships and from feelings of deprivation in relation to others.

Loneliness as a “subjective distressing and unpleasant state in which individuals perceive deficiencies in their social world” . These deficiencies are not only quantitative, such as few friends or infrequent social activities, but are also indicative of poor-quality relationships in which people feel a lack of intimacy and emotional closeness as well as feel unloved, unaccepted, not sufficiently cared for, misunderstood, or unvalidated by a relationship partner. In fact, a person can feel lonely while being in a close relationship with a cool, rejecting, inconsistent, or unavailable partner.

SEX....................

We live in a sex-saturated culture. Sexual iconography has increased dramatically in advertising during the last decade and images of entwined couples, arched backs and orgasmic expressions bombard us from billboards, cinema screens and newspapers (Gill, 2007). Women’s magazines and ‘‘lads mags’’ tell us the kinds of sex we should (and should not) be having (Attwood, 2005). Television stations attract viewers with endless documentaries on sexual practices. Porn is ever more freely available on the Internet providing another mythologised version of sex. The overwhelming message is that ‘‘everyone is always ready, willing and able to have sex’’

In psychiatric and psychological practice, it is often assumed that when people present for an assessment the mere act of attendance suggests that the person has decided that he or she wants ‘something’, either a diagnosis or treatment. This also implies that the patient recognizes that something is wrong, that something distresses them and that they want to change or overcome their ‘problem’. A further assumption is that it is the job of the health care practitioner to give information,

Emotional Dysregulation

Emotion Dysregulation

Emotion dysregulation is the inability, even when one’s best efforts are applied, to change or regulate emotional cues, experiences, actions, verbal responses, and/or nonverbal expressions under normative conditions. Pervasive emotion dysregulation is seen when the inability to regulate emotions occurs across a wide range of emotions, adaptation problems, and situational contexts.

Pervasive emotion dysregulation is due to vulnerability to high emotionality, together with an inability to regulate intense emotion-linked responses. Characteristics of emotion dysregulation include an excess of painful emotional experiences; an inability to regulate intense arousal; problems turning attention away from emotional cues; cognitive distortions and failures in information processing; insufficient control of impulsive behaviors related to strong positive and negative affect; difficulties organizing and coordinating activities to achieve non-mood-dependent goals during emotional arousal; and a tendency to “freeze” or dissociate under very high stress. It can also present as emotion overcontrol and suppression, which leads to pervasive negative affect, low positive affect, an inability to up-regulate emotions, and difficulty with affective communication. Systemic dysregulation is produced by emotional vulnerability and by maladaptive and inadequate emotion modulation strategies.

Emotional vulnerability is defined by these characteristics:
           (1) very high negative affectivity as a baseline,
           (2) sensitivity to emotional stimuli,
           (3) intense response to emotional stimuli, and
           (4) slow return to emotional baseline once emotional arousal has occurred.

relationship counselling @ Mind Zone...................

The Problem:

W: Do you love me? (accusing tone)

H: Of course I do. How many times have I told you?

W: Well it doesn’t feel like it (tears, looks down, turns away)

H: (Sighs-exasperated) Well, maybe you have a problem then. I can’t help it if

you don’t feel loved. (Set mouth, lecturing tone.)

W: Right. So it’s my problem is it? Nothing to do with you, right? Nothing to do

with your ten feet thick walls. You’re an emotional cripple. You’ve never

felt a real emotion in your life.

H: I refuse to talk to you when you get like this. So irrational. There is no

point.

W: Right. This is what always happens. You put up your wall. You go icy. Till I

get tired and give up. Then, after a while, when you want sex you

decide that I am not quite so bad after all.

H: There is no point in talking to you. This is a shooting gallery. You’re so

aggressive.

Rigid pattern- blame/withdraw and absorbing states of negative emotion form

feedback loop. No safe emotional connection-escalating danger and isolation.

anger management

The A-B-C-D Model

Albert Ellis developed a model that is consistent with the way we conceptualize anger management
treatment. He calls his model the A-B-C-D or rational-emotive model. In this model, “A”

stands for an activating event, what we have been calling the red-flag event. “B” represents the

beliefs people have about the activating event. Ellis claims that it is not the events themselves

that produce feelings such as anger, but our interpretations of and beliefs about the events.

“C” stands for the emotional consequences of events. In other words, these are the feelings

people experience as a result of their interpretations of and beliefs concerning the event.
According to Ellis and other cognitive behavioral theorists, as people become angry, they
engage in an internal dialog, called “self-talk.” For example, suppose you were waiting for a
bus to arrive. As it approaches, several people push in front of you to board. In this situation,
you may start to get angry. You may be thinking, “How can people be so inconsiderate! They
just push me aside to get on the bus. They obviously don’t care about me or other people.”
Examples of the irrational self-talk that can produce anger escalation are reflected in statements
such as “People should be more considerate of my feelings,” “How dare they be so
inconsiderate and disrespectful,” and “They obviously don’t care about anyone but themselves.”

Ellis says that people do not have to get angry when they encounter such an event. The event
itself does not get them upset and angry; rather, it is people’s interpretations of and beliefs
concerning the event that cause the anger. Beliefs underlying anger often take the form of
“should” and “must.” Most of us may agree, for example, that respecting others is an
admirable quality. Our belief might be, “People should always respect others.” In reality, however,
people often do not respect each other in everyday encounters. You can choose to view
the situation more realistically as an unfortunate defect of human beings, or you can let your
anger escalate every time you witness, or are the recipient of, another person’s disrespect.
Unfortunately, your perceived disrespect will keep you angry and push you toward the explosion
phase. Ironically, it may even lead you to show disrespect to others, which would violate your
own fundamental belief about how people should be treated.
Ellis’ approach consists of identifying irrational beliefs and disputing them with more rational

or realistic perspectives (in Ellis’ model, “D” stands for dispute). You may get angry, for example,

when you start thinking, “I must always be in control. I must control every situation.” It is
not possible or appropriate, however, to control every situation. Rather than continue with
these beliefs, you can try to dispute them. You might tell yourself, “I have no power over things
I cannot control,” or “I have to accept what I cannot change.”

People may have many other irrational beliefs that may lead to anger. Consider an example
where a friend of yours disagrees with you. You may start to think, “Everyone must like me and

give me approval.” If you hold such a belief, you are likely to get upset and angry when you
face rejection. However, if you dispute this irrational belief by saying, “I can’t please everyone;
some people are not going to approve of everything I do,” you will most likely start to calm
down and be able to control your anger more easily.
Another common irrational belief is, “I must be respected and treated fairly by everyone.” This
also is likely to lead to frustration and anger. Most folks, for example, live in an urban society
where they may, at times, not be given the common courtesy they expect. This is unfortunate,
but from an anger management perspective, it is better to accept the unfairness and lack of
interpersonal connectedness that can result from living in an urban society. Thus, to dispute
this belief, it is helpful to tell yourself, “I can’t be expected to be treated fairly by everyone.”
Other beliefs that may lead to anger include “Everyone should follow the rules,” or “Life should
be fair,” or “Good should prevail over evil,” or “People should always do the right thing.” These
are beliefs that are not always followed by everyone in society, and, usually, there is little you
can do to change that. How might you dispute these beliefs? In other words, what thoughts
that are more rational and adaptive and will not lead to anger can be substituted for such
beliefs?
